#Ilayaraja nothing but wind movie#
Almost every single movie of Mohan had at least 1 super song, and in few movies, all the songs were just classics.

Of the 5 male artists who have been so highly respected in the tamil movies, Mohan is the single artist who with average acting skills compared to the others, stood out to gain the most from the Maestro. Film directors had a special regard for the Maestro, and I have heard several versions of how his music be it background or in songs have shaped the directors to redo scenes and just go with the Maestro’s flow. The artists were all talented, but Raja’s music catapulted them to even greater heights. I know, I am being partial to the lady artists here, but, the film industry was just that way. Tamil music from the late 70s to the mid-90s was dominated by 5 key hero’s. Some artists have very short songs in 2 mins or they stretch over 6 minutes making them boring or lengthy. The key observation I had was the average song-time is closer to 4.20 mins, something which is perfect for the ears and mind. His singing pitch for his songs either in duet or solo is unique, and I have not seen many modern singers sing the songs he has sung, perhaps they are just meant to be classic and his unique signature. You can have a playlist of mix-n-match songs or by genres and you can be assured of some of the best compositions in Tamil music anyone has ever composed till date. His music genre spanned from happy, peppy, sad, romantic, practical, authoritative, solos, duets, and many many more and he has several hit songs across all these genres. There are several songs which I must have played in ‘loop’ and these songs themselves are over 25 years old, are mesmerizing and I am so glad they exist and I was introduced to them. When I listen to his older songs now, not because I am more familiar or could relate to them better as I have been hearing them for a long time, his musical signature is just unique, addictive and you can never get bored of it. However, till today, I am yet to come across 1 composer who can match the Maestro. But with the advent of electronic drums and beats in the mid-90s and the birth of several newer composers, audiences were introduced to newer materials. Movies, Cinemas were running to packed houses just for his songs. I have been hearing his songs from the mid-80s, and at that time, when there was literally no one else in the scene his songs were assumed to be great and listenable. The melody, the rhythm, use of classical or western musical instruments, the playback singers, and the addiction to hear them again and again, speaks volumes of the Maestro. When you hear a Tamil film music track from the late 70s to the mid-90s, you can spot his signature with ease. The diversity of his compositions and command and control of over 30 years of Tamil film music, has set several records and has been matched by none. Raja, had his roots from the great MSV, he has praised MSV for whom he is today. I would rank MSV a brilliant composer, a person who came out from poverty, had no idea from where his next meal would come, to composing the tune for the Tamil national anthem, and for innumerable movies and short plays. Tamil film music has had great composers from the late 50s such as A.M Rajah, MS Viswanathan (MSV), Viswanathan and Ramamurthy who had churned out hits and great compositions. Tamil movies have always been great when it came to music. In the late 70s, music was related to film music, unlike in the western countries, where individuals and bands were thriving and reaching frenzied peak decades later. He has won the national film award a record 5 times. I am a great fan of the Maestro, and even after 3 decades of his musical influences on me, still long for more and more. Illaiyaraja (Raja) is one such genius, beyond prodigy, and someone who has won the hearts and minds of millions of fans around the world. Music is an art, be it composing, playing, singing or performing, it is quite rare to see geniuses who can do all of them with ease, repeatedly, and over decades.
